The by-pass insert is used for ventilation in the summer months , when nights are cold and it is advantageous to quickly exchange warm exhaled air from the interior of the house without transferring heat to the cold fresh air from outside. Compared to a heat recovery exchanger, the insert has minimal pressure losses, which reduces the consumption of electricity consumed by the fans and increases the speed of air exchange.
